Passages for Reading
1. Smoking
It is almost known to all that smoking is bad for people's health. Scientific research show that smoking can lead to heart disease, cancer and other problem. The World Health Organization says diseases linked to smoking kill at least two million five-hundred-thousand persons each year.
Still, many people find it difficult to stop smoking. One reason is that smoking usually
becomes a habitual behavior, and habits, whether good or bad are not easy to be given up. Another reason is the effect of nicotine, the substance found in cigarettes works on people somewhat as drugs do.
Measures have been taken to help people keep away from the harm of smoking. In many cities, smoking is forbidden in public places. The danger of smoking is warned of everywhere. And newspapers are asked not to publish advertisements for cigarettes. World "No Tobacco Day" is observed every year as the biggest campaign against smoking.
2. My First Job
Before I started at university, I took my first job as a waitress in a nice restaurant. At the night before my first day, I was too excited to go to sleep and as a result, I got up late in the morning. I threw on my clothes and rushed over to the restaurant.
In a great hurry, I didn't hear clearly the head waiter's instruction that we should go into the kitchen through one door and out from the other. So when I took two plates of eggs and bacon and an orange juice out to the restaurant, I went straight towards the wrong door and collided with another waiter coming in!
Worst of all was that I wore a pair of smart shoes but with high heels! A few hours later I was in agony yet had no time to change them. By the time we finished serving dinner at about 10:30 I was completely exhausted. Nevertheless, I learnt something through my experience.
3. Money
Money is what everybody desires. It can be used to buy food, clothes, books, bicycle, furniture and many other things people need or want.
Money is considered by many people as the most important thing in life. With money, they can go wherever they please and do whatever they want. With money, they can buy a fine house to live in, fashionable clothes to put on, and a nice bicycle to ride. And with money, they can employ attendants to serve them. In a word, money can make people comfortable and bring them happiness.
However, money is also the source of all crimes and brings them misery. Since money is so tempting, quite a few people are attracted by it and begin to go astray. By hook or by crook, they try to make money. To get more money, they gamble, swindle, steal, rob or do many other evil things, for "money makes the mare go". As a result, money leads them to jail or even to the execution grounds.
Of course money is useful and desirable, yet we should make money in proper way and spend
our money on proper things.
4. My View on Opportunity
Different people have different views on opportunity. It is held that there are few opportunities. But it is also held that there are opportunities everywhere.
Those who hold the first opinion think that there are too many people and there is always an intense competition for limited opportunities. In contrast, those who hold the second view think that if one is not prepared, he can hardly have any opportunities: however, if one is prepared, he can have a lot of opportunities.
As to me, I agree with the latter. Admittedly, there is really an intense competition for limited opportunities, but it is not to say the one can't create opportunities himself. In most cases opportunities are created by people themselves. For example, many people lost their jobs in recent years. Some people wait for opportunities in vain. However, others create opportunities themselves and get self-employed. Eventually they become employers themselves.
Therefore, to some extent, one can take his destiny into his own hands.
5. Job-hopping
Different people have different views on job-hopping. Some people would like to always engage in one work because they think that if one sticks to one work, he will be quite familiar and skillful with the work. However, others would like to change jobs constantly because they consider it fashionable to do so and besides they think they can get different work experiences. As to me, I am in favor of the former group of people's attitude. I think that if one always works in one field, he can accumulate a lot of experience in that field which in turn will further improve his work. Therefore he will become an expert in that field. However, if one hops from one job to another, he can never amass experience in one field. Although he can get different work experiences, he can't make use of these experiences in one particular work. Therefore, he will always be a jack-of-all-trades.
In conclusion, if one wants to be an expert in one field, he should not hop from one job to another.

English in the World
Some people say that the English language no longer belongs to the English, and it belongs to the world. It is estimated that the number of people who use English exceeds 750 million. Among
these, about 350 million are native speakers, while the rest use it as an official language. If we add to this number the people who have acquired the language to some extent, the total is close to one billion.
English plays an increasingly important role in the world as a medium for conducting international business and diplomacy, as well as in science and medicine, the Internet, air and sea
communications, international sports events, radio and TV programs, pop songs and movies.

When you read an English book, you often come across new words. You might try to guess what the words mean from the words you know, but when you cannot guess the meanings of new words at all, what should you do?
You have a good friend then. From him you can learn what a word means, how to pronounce a word, how to use a word, and so on. This friend can always be with you, and you can always ask him to help you. Do you know who this friend is? It is a dictionary.
You can learn some important things about words from it, so you must know how to use it. 朋友

Learning English in England
I came to England last summer. I have been in England for eleven months. I am going to finish my studies in England soon, and will leave for China next month.
At first it was very difficult for me to communicate with other people in English. Now I can speak English much better, and even understand English television, because I have studied hard and my teachers and classmates have helped me a lot.
I have lots of English friends now. Some of them have even invited me for dinner at their houses. They are interested to learn about China and Chinese people. Every time they ask me a lot of questions, I realize how little I know about my own country.

Body Language
If you can speak English, you know a lot of English words. You can read, speak and understand. But there is another kind of language you need to know — the language of the body.
All over the world, people "talk?with their hands, with their heads, and with their eyes. When Japanese people meet, they bow. When Indians meet, they put their hands together.
When British and American people meet someone for the first time, they shake hands. They do not usually shake hands with people they know well. Women sometimes kiss their women friends, and men kiss women friends (on the cheek only). When a man meets a man friend, he just smiles, and says "Hello? Men do not kiss each other, or hold hands. Even fathers and sons do not often kiss each other.

Hobbies
My hobby is collecting stamps. When I began, I tried to collect the stamps of all the countries, but now I collect only Greek and Indian ones because I have friends in Greece and I live in India.
Some of my stamps are very pretty, and they are all interesting. When you look at stamps carefully,
they teach you a lot about the history of other countries.
My brother's hobby is watching trains. He goes to our station and watches them there. When an engine goes through the station he writes down its name and number. He likes train watching very much, but I don't. I went to the station with him one day, but it wasn't interesting.
My sister's hobby is sewing. She hasn't got a sewing machine, but she sews with our mother's. Sometimes she sews by hand too. She makes most of her clothes, and when I tear my shirt or my trousers, I take them to her and she mends them.

Climbing Mountains
Do you like climbing mountains? My friend Ted does. He has never climbed a dangerous
mountain, but he has climbed some quite big and difficult ones. He began to climb rocks when he was a small boy. Ted liked it very much and he did not get very tired. The next year his father took him up some mountains in Scotland, and he was very happy.
Last summer holidays, Ted's uncle invited him to go to Switzerland. The mountains are high there. They went to Switzerland by train and had a very good holiday. They climbed several mountains. At the end of the holiday he said to Ted, "You are still very young, but you already climb
well."Ted was very glad.
Now Ted wants to go to China to climb some of the very high peaks in the Himalayas, but he is still too young and also he hasn't got enough money. Perhaps one day he will become rich, and then he will go to China.

A Visit to the City Centre
On their first day in the capital, Diana and Peter visited the Old Tower which stood on a hill near the city centre. There were stairs leading to the top, but Diana and Peter decided to take the lift. At the top there was a cafe and a balcony where visitors could stand and enjoy the view. It was magnificent — you could see the whole city, the river and the hills beyond.
On their way back from the Tower, Diana and Peter went past the main square in the city centre. They stopped at a stall to have some orange juice, and sat and watched the traffic for a while. The square was very busy, with cars, buses, bicycles and pedestrians going in all directions. In the centre of the square there was a policeman controlling the traffic.

A Bus Ride
One day I was on a bus. I found an elderly woman standing in front of me. She had a big bag in her hand. "It's a virtue for a young person to help the old,"I said to myself.
When I was standing up to give my seat to the old lady, a young foreigner got up quickly saying, "Please sit down."The old lady thanked him and sat down. She looked very happy.
I was a little embarrassed because I was sitting in the middle of the bus. Suddenly a pregnant
woman got onto the bus. I quickly stood up to give up my seat to her. The foreigner smiled at me. He said that he was an Australian, and was a student studying Chinese culture in China.

In a Strange City
If you go out by yourself in a strange city, you might get lost. What should you do? How can you find your way? Of course, if you never go out alone, you won't get lost, but you will also miss a lot of good experiences.
One thing you can do in case you get lost is take a map along. It might also be a good idea to take a card from your hotel, so you have the hotel's address. If the map doesn't help you, or if you
forget to take one, you must ask how to get where you're going. You can ask, for example, "There is Nova Hotel?'or "How do I get to Nova Hotel?"or "Do you know where Nova Hotel is?"Police officers and clerks in shops are often helpful when you ask directions.

get lost 迷路 experience 經(jīng)歷 in case 如果,萬一

A School Outing
The date for school outing was set for June 20th. The principal told us it would cost six dollars each. "This year,"he said, "We will go by train. This is a change from last year."
We assembled at the school at 9 o'lock, and by 9:30 we were aboard the train. It was a good arrangement. Each car held two classes. Three cars were added to the regular train so that there would be enough room for other passengers. As our classes were only about thirty each, there was plenty of room.
We arrived at our destination by twelve, and each class went with its teacher to lunch. Then the guides came and took us for a tour of West Point and finally we stopped at a small river where we had snacks.
We were on the train again by six o'lock. We never needed the raincoats everyone was carrying.
