16 September 2015 Lack of physical activity is responsible for 9% of premature death, and 6%--10% appearance of diseases like coronary artery diseases, diabetes, breast cancer, and colon cancer.
According to the data released by WHO on 15, among 46 countries in Europe, more than 50% adults are overweight or obese. Some of those countries has 70% overweight and population rate. In other countries, more than 40% boys aged 7-8 years old are overweight, in which 20% are obese.
WHO Regional Committee pointed out that although benefits of physical activity are well-informed to people, there is an increasing trend of lacking exercise and sitting for long time. More and more people spending long time sitting at one spot, like working at the desk, watching TV, using computer and driving vehicles instead of walking or bicycling. Aside from this, living habit like eating high fat, high salt and high glucose food leads to an obvious increase in the amount of people dying from and being disabled by cardiovascular diseases. Meanwhile, to those who participate in physical activity, risk of suffering from heart diseases can be reduced by 30%.
In order to motivate people to exercise more and sit less, alleviate the high burden of regional health care system for treating diseases caused by lacking exercise, Ministers of Health from 53 European member countries in WHO have initiated first 10-year strategy from 2016 to 2025 in European region to encourage people to get more exercise by increasing and improving facilities. WHO encourages European governments to cooperate to stick to this strategy in a broad way and involve this strategy to national level. As exercise can be taken as a part of daily life, living quality will be improved and life-span will be prolonged.
